About the Course
Everyone loves a good story, but did you know you can apply the elements of good storytelling to any type of writing or communication, from résumés and cover letters that tell future employers the story of your life and career, to presentations and reports that transform a dry subject into a compelling narrative?
This course breaks down narrative examples into their most basic parts so that students can take those elements and apply them to their own communication in the workplace and beyond. Studies have shown that people are far more motivated, inspired, and persuaded by the elements of story than by raw facts. This has implications for our chances at landing a job, our effectiveness at work, and even our opportunities for vocational advancement and promotion. In our Storytelling course, students will gain the abilities to understand how good stories work, apply narrative devices to a variety of purposes, and tell their own engaging stories.

Testimonials

Tina H.
Path Student, June 2020
“The lecturer did a great job at talking to us at the start of the course to find out what we were wanting to get out of the lessons, and tailored a large amount of the in-class discussion to just what kinds of advice each of us were wanting to learn.”
Course Requirements
Storytelling is the third course in our Writing for Results badge. Though students may take our courses in any order, we do recommend starting with Nuts & Bolts, then proceeding to the next two courses in the badge: Writing as Process, and this course, Storytelling. Students may choose to complete a badge in its entirety or simply elect to take one or two courses from that badge that most address their professional development needs.
This course is 4 weeks long. Each week, you will have two 1-hour sessions of live instruction, and then 1-2 hours of homework. That means a total time commitment of no more than 12-16 hours! This length of time allows students to fully explore the course topic and develop strong foundational skills without having to commit to a lengthy training program.

Plus, you won’t need any fancy equipment to participate. As long as you have a computer and an Internet connection, you can be a Signum Path student. Our program uses GoToWebinar conferencing software for live class sessions. Through the GTW interface, you can ask questions and submit comments to your instructor. The instructor can also allow audio for individual comments or group discussions, depending on the needs of the course. Video sharing is also available for demonstrations, presenting assignments, and other interactive elements.
This course will also use a Google Classroom that you will access through a Signum-provided email address. In that classroom space, you can view and submit assignments, check the course schedule, and discuss ideas with your instructor and fellow participants.
